ive got an 84 f-250 that had a 6.9l in it and ive been looking into doing a cummins conversion. ive found some cummins is newer trucks such as 97-99 but i know these trucks have a lot more electronics than the older ones. i was wondering how to convert these engines with all of the electronics? i looked at ford cummins and didnt see anything about how to convert the electronics. thanks

If it has a P-pump you can use it, so engines from 1997 and back will be fine for you.  Cummins switched to the VP44 injector pump in '98.5, so avoid those and newer engines to minimize your electronics work.  You also avoid the dreaded "53" series block with using the '97 or earlier design.

The big concern for these early engines will be the KDP fix, because if you don't do this $100 fix it will eat your engine.  Google "killer dowel pin" to find out what it is, what it can do, and buy a kit to fix it.

you could use up to an 02 motor its just that you would have to change the injector pump out to a p-7100 or p-pump it as its called. that would eliminate the electronics. not all 53's are bad some crack some dont
I burn more diesel and run more miles in a week the most of you people do in a month. ctds that have been used 97 3500, 98.5 3500, 98.5 3500,01 3500, 03 3500. those that are being used 06 3500, 07 3500. and yea these trucks earn their living

True, not all of the 53's crack .... but for someone to actually be dropping a Cummins in a Ford, he needs to eliminate as many issues as possible before doing this.  That would be like telling someone it's okay to use a hair dryer while in a bathtub, just make sure you don't drop it.

If you're serious about doing the swap, take pictures and lots of them.  This is the kind of thing that could put you in the magazine.  Make sure you use a really good 8MP or better camera.

I think a CR swap into an old truck would be cool, but you'd have to do a lot of extra work. It's not like on a newer Superduty where you can use the stock components.

CR gives you a little more versatility, especially concerning power vs. drivability.
