my '01 7.3l has been having glow plug problems lately, didnt know much about diesels when i bought this truck so i didnt know that the MASSIVE amount of white smoke on cold starts was prolly glow plug problem...

anyway...

so last week when my truck wouldnt start at all (at about 50 degrees) in the morning i traced it to a faulty glow plug relay, no voltage coming out, so i buy a new one but ended over-tightening the nut and snapped off one of the large poles...relay still closed and i got by by turning the key on and running around the truck to hold the wire against the relay, so finally i get another new one, install fine this time but now the relay will NOT close, tested for power i get power to all the terminals but the one that goes to the glow plugs, test the relay with jumper cables and it closes

thats the first problem

so last night i wired a toggle switch directly to the glow plug terminal on the relay so i could bypass the relay all together. not nearly as many amps but it was enough to get the truck started this morning, but then about a minute and a half later the truck stalls and is now a no start...

ive done the cam position sensor recall
plugged in the block heater, didnt help
checked all fuses
drained fuel filter housing, it refills during cranking
ran fine for 1.5 minutes so thinking not injectors
so now thinking maybe IPR or ICP
no smoke during cranking
checked and rechecked all sensor connections i could find all seem clean and fine

truck has aftermarket injectors(65 pounders is what i was told, dont know what that means) and dp tuner chip

anyone got ideas? i really dont get why it would start, then die, and not start again?

What could i use to scan the sensors? gotta be something i can plug in and test trhough the sensors?

no i didnt, but i just discovered a lot of air bubbles coming from tank to the in-line pump, what could cause this to happen?

I had something like this happen with my 02 F350 was the oil i used put some cheap oil in had about 1500 miles on it when it would not start. But after i changed my oil i had to hit it with some starter flud it ran like *** for about 1/2 day it was the IPR and high PSI oil pump flow was bad. I changed my oil again after about 2000 miles ran fine after that.

do not use starter fluid with glow plugs! if you want to have glow plugs anymore.
