Here's a pic I just uploaded of my bags so you can see what I'm talking about.

I'll use myself as an example.  I could tow my RV/toyhauler with a 3/4 ton, but when I bought my '08 the price difference between the 2500 and the 3500 was about $2,000.  For me, I erred on the side of caution because I knew I would be towing an RV/toyhauler that fully loaded would be pushing 10,000 pounds.  This made the 3500 the obvious choice.  I didn't want to push my luck, so I opted for having a little bit of cushion versus not having any.

I'm more concerned about you safely driving down the road, which is why I'm saying lean more towards the 1 ton.  Could the 3/4 ton handle it?  Of course it can, but unfortunately you're dealing with a different kind of bed weight.  All slide in campers are a top heavy design.  Wait till you get a mild cross wind while on the highway then you'll understand what I mean.

I personally always err on the side of caution because I've seen catastrophic failure more than once in my life, and its not something I desire to see again.

I agree with a 3500 over a 2500 for peace of mind... Another thing to consider is the 24v Cummins only came 3500 with DRW and that would suck.

I've had two 3500's with the 24V, one QCSB (2003) and one QC longbed (2008) .... both were single rear wheel.

You don't have to get DRW in the 1 ton if you don't want it.

Okay, when I said 24v, I ment 2nd Gen Dodge... The '03+ would be the CRD.  I should have been more specific.

Ahhh okay Creeper .... that makes more sense then.

Rich, you've got a good idea with the conversion to SRW.  He could convert it and it would be better suited to driving offroad for campsites and locations for base camp for the rockcrawler, plus there are 2 less tires needed when it's time to buy another set.

Why would I do that if everything else is the same?!?  All the reports that I'm hearing say the only difference between the 3500 and the 2500 IN THE 2ND GEN DODGES is the dually.  Same springs, same running gear, etc...

they do not have the same springs the dually has overloads while the 2500 doesnt. thats why a 1ton can haul more, its not just because of the extra tires.  Also believe the 2500 has the dana 70 while the dually has the dana 80 axle

You could be right... I've been sifting through more contradictions than I care to admit trying to figure all this out!
