my freind has a 04 F250 Harley truck with a 6.0 diesel motor in it and 56k miles. are all these motor problems common with diesel motors or did he just get a bad one. this guy is afraid to dive his truck because he can not afford any more repair bills. he bought the truck new and so far it has had 3 egr valves 1 oil pump cooler, one dealer said it mite need head gaskets/ may be even heads pluss a host of other problems and repairs. thats just the motor thats not including all of the electrical issues the truck has had and fords will not help. like i said is this common

khicks62,
I personally own a 2004 Ford Excursion with now 182,000 miles on it. It is a 6.0L diesel, and the Excursion is the same thing as a F-350 SRW 1-ton short bed. We have run into a maze of problems with the engine. My story is very similar to yours, head gaskets blew, and the valves. My plan was to spend no more then $10k on engine/trans/x-fer case and replace the 6.0L with a Cummins 12v/Allison/Atlas II. I do not think the 6.0L is worth saving. The problems are commen, you can read up on it on just about any diesel forum. Also note that the main problem with the 6.0L is the Head Studs. They're small, and a low count. To solve the head gasket problem you will need to replace the Head Studs with aftermarket performance one. ARP, BD-power, or Elite diesel might be a good place to start looking if you choose to save the 6.0L. Don't spend more then $500 one them. Last thing I would like to mention is that even though I have no personally replaced my own Head Studs, I hear you have to lift the cab off the chassis to access all the Head Studs. I am not 100% sure on that though.

What all does your friend have done to the truck and what does he use it for? I have 05 harley ed. with a chip, exhaust, and intake and haven't had any problems of it. Yes EGR and headstuds are common problems n somethin i'd like to fix on mine, but usually they don't cause problems unless the truck is really juiced up.
