I'm thinking about putting a Cummins N14 in my 1997 Chevy Silverado 3500. The engone is making 525hp/1750lb torq, the truck has a 6.5 diesel in it. I know I'm going to need a new ECM and injectors. What other parts and modifications am I going to need to make to my truck. I'm trying to use the truck to pull a 48ft car hauler trailer with it and i dont want to be the truck that slowing everybody down.

I'm guessing this is a legitimate post. First off, the N14 weighs way more than your front axle can possibly carry. The sheer size of it makes it impossible to fit. You would be better off going with something like a Cummins 6BT, Perkins 6.354, or an International DT360.
If you want to tow a trailer that big, get the truck that the N14 came in.

You need a bigger truck, something like an FL-60.

maybe upgrade your truck. it would be way cheaper. friend of mine tows a 50ft hay trailer with a 7.3l dually.grosses over 30k lbs when were full. not speedy like 80mph but does great. how many cars do you put on this trailer? 3 or 4 tops right? and im assuming its cars not one ton trucks?

fl 60 wont hold the n14, mite hold the L10 but i doubt that they come with the 8.3. the only way to put an n14 in that truck is to mount it in the bed. someone did that cant think of who tho

I'm going to upgradethe front suspension to an 18 wheelers suspension. I'm going to stretch the front of the truck so i wont have to put the engine in the bed. I'm going to put as many cars as i can fit on it, they say its a 4 car trailer but i think i can squeeze 1 more on there. I'm a speed demon so I can't be doing under 80mph on the interstate. So what all more stuff will I need????

this post seems to be a joke...but if its not, why would u spend all this money on parts to do this in stead of buying an f650 or a kodiak if you wanted to skip the class 8 truck option.secondly, how are you planning on fitting a frontend thats 7.5 ft long under a truck thats not 7ft wide, and springs that are 2 feet longer, and dont even mention steering. sounds like a waste to me but not impossible. just doesnt sound like it would be streetable you know?

put down the crack pipe and step away. you will be able to buy a larger truck for what your wanting to spend.

Sorry, I meant skip the whole idea of a transplant and just buy the right truck for the job in the first place.

The 14 liter engine was used from semi-trucks to large gen-sets to light rail passenger engines, and you'd need a semi-truck frame for an N14 to pull/haul a load the size the OP wants.

It's just not feasible using an engine of this size on a 1 ton frame without torque flexing the frame.

i, for one, hope you are completely serious 'cuz i think that would be a badass truck the frame will need some heavy modding along with everything else but that would be awesome if you think you can do it i would say go for it it would get a LOT of attention  Grin

Realistically, you need a semi-truck frame.  The engine weighs 3600 pounds and when you add in that you want to tow with it the 1400 lb/ft of torque produced by this engine will twist the 1 ton frame like a pretzel.

I'm not saying it can't be done because there is an article in a previous issue of Diesel Power where someone put one in the bed of his F-150 truck and he drives it.

What I'm saying is it can't be done the way you want and its intended use.

You might also want to reconsider doing this because this engine will only get you about 8 to 10 MPG at best.

so in your spare time you want to spend all your money on something that isnt PRACTICAL.people do these kinds of things for toys. not everyday haulers.why couldnt you buy a single axle class 8 day cab, and start with that. youll have so much invested in framework, axles, electrical, body work, it would end up being a toy or showtruck, mostly as a coversational piece. if your dead set on doing it, just go do it then becuase the questions you ask and the way you ask them make it seem as if its a joke. good luck.

get a different job if you have that much spare time besides the motor will cut down the weight you can casrry with the one ton plus you will be way overloaded by adding more then 4 vehicles. talk to some other guys who ahul for a living anbd see what they say about your "idea"

I make good money I'm a welding engineer so how much it cost doesn't matter to me. I don't really feel like getting another job. It's not going to be a everyday driver I'm going to use it when I go to the track. It's not going to be a show truck they take to long to keep clean. So is there anything else I will need.
