I recently got back from a 4 hr trip and about twenty miles out i got on it hard and noticed white smoke coming from the exaust! I parked it for a while then turned the chip up and went around the block. When it was under 160 degrees it was blowing black smoke, but when it gets to normal operation temp its almost completely white smoke. I drove it clean all the way from the beach trying to see what fuel milage i could get, so i wasn't driving it hard??? Any tips on the cause???

Were you pullin a trailer when you "got on it?" What did your temps get up to when you did that? Normally when you see white smoke that means there is water gettin there some where. Funny though that it only does it once its up to operating temps. Does the power still seem to be fine? Still idle smoothly?

cycle the key 3 times leave it on (no start)and watch the odometer see if its showing a code? a bad VP 44 can cause this also. also unhook the edge and see if its causing it.

Air in fuel, water in fuel, low fuel pressure, bad VP, bad injector tip, low pop pressure on an injector, or blown head gasket could all cause it. Start simple and work your way up.

Rolled the key 3 times and it said P1693??? I googled that and it said "companion code"??? Not sure on it though. Drained the fuel in the fuel filter and it looked real clean! And my fuel pressure is up in the 20's! Whats your thoughts on the P1693? And what is the safest way and place to unhook the edge??? I am a backyard mechanic but not on electronics.

The P1693 code is a "companion" code, and just means you have a stored code and will need a scanner to pull it. The white smoke at operating temp is odd and could be a couple things:
Bad injector Coolant leak into cylinder Water in fuel
Have you checked your engine oil for overfill or a diesel smell?

Thanks! i will run it by Autozone and let them scan it! It only has 79K miles on it! And the oil is fine and does't smell funny!
If injectors, would you recomend stock ones or going bigger? How big for Towing??? I do a lot of trailer pulling for rock crawling!

For a slight increase in power for towing I'd pull the injectors, replace the tips with some 50hp ones, and then have them tested. Its quite a bit cheaper than new injectors but requires a bit more time. Now if money isn't a problem then just swap out yours for a new set with the 50hp tips installed and you'll be fine.
F1, DPP, or even stock injectors with new tips will all be fine ..... it depends on what you want it to do for you. Once you figure that out it's all good.
