I have an 06' cummins  with a bad a/c compressor. It's starting to want to lock up and burn my belt. No money for a new compressor. Has anyone tried to get a shorter belt to bypass it? Also, I have a bad battery, so I just unhooked it and am just running with one. What, if anything, am I tearing up? Please help. I am in a bind!

OK. I got a new Napa battery, so I'm good on that end. I rerouted my factory serpentine belt away from the a/c compressor. Pulled the tensioner allthe way back and got my wife to pinch the belt tight on the alternator pulley and mark it. Then I took the belt out and measured between the marks she made. I got 109 inches. Napa sells a belt for a cummins without a/c,  but its only 100.4" or something like that. I have a belt ordered 108.5" long.  Has anybody on here ever messed with any of this? If so, is this going to work or not?

It's funny to me that this is such a mysterious problem. I have searched all over Google and can't find an answer. Looks like I'll be the first person to ever put a shorter belt on my truck to bypass my fubarred a/c compressor.

there should be a belt for the motor without the a/c  mite have to get info from the dealer.. Also i'm betting thats it was your passenger side battery that went bad.. make sure you clean the terminals and cable really good or it will happen again

Napa had the belt for cummins without a/c, but it was about 8 inches too short. I figure those motors have a whole different pulley setup. Also, the bad battery was on the drivers side. They both had about 60,000 miles on em. The 108.5" belt I ordered will be in Tuesday. I'll let you know how it turns out. Thanks for the input.

Tried the 108.5" belt.....too short. 109 & 3/8th" still a hair to short. So, Napa ordered a 109 & 3/4" belt. Be here tomorrow. This trial and error thing sucks. I wish that you could get a cheap remanufactured compressor, but apparently not. Cheapest new I've found is in the $500 dollar range. Stupid.

109 & 3/4" belt......still too short! Gonna try 110 3/4" tomorrow.  If that don't work, ill have to just wait till I can afford a new a/c compressor.

OK! I finally got it! I been at the trial and error game for a week and now I have an answer. If you have an 06 Dodge cummins with a locked up a/c compressor, you don't HAVE to go buy a new compressor. ($448.00 at Napa) you can bypass the compressor with a shorter belt! The belt I finally found is 110.75" long. It could stand to be 1/4" shorter, but apparently nobody makes that length in an 8 rib belt. Anyway, route the belt over all your pulleys the same as before, except run straight down from the alternator towards the very bottom motor drive pulley, going over the tensionor. This will take the compressor out of the equation. My belt is just a hair loose, but its got me back on the road until I can afford a new a/c compressor. I hope this might help somebody. Diesel power should do a tech article on this!
