What is the best upgrade for the 5.9L Cummins to get better fuel economy when not towing?  I replaced the air filter with a K&N and am now thinking of either an exhaust upgrade or a programmer.  What are your suggestions?

EXHAUST-EXHAUST-EXHAUST!!The K&N is good too.
Diesels gotta breathe. In-n-out. Turbo back 4" will be one of the best mods you can start out with. It's a mod that you will feel and see the difference in right after it's done.
Power, EGT's and MPG's will improve noticably.Programmer is another mod that works even more on power and MPG after that.
But let it breathe first.

The 2007 already has the 4" from turbo back.  What brand would you recommend for a complete performance exhaust system in 5"?

There are alot of different opinions on exhaust size that Ive heard, but most say unless your going to do alot of very expensive engine mods a 4" is probably a sufficient size. You could change out the stock muffler to a more free flowing one or as some do, take it off completelyand straight pipe it, that would help some but would be on the louder side. Makes it sound like a real truck. I dont mind the sound of my free flowing muffler myself. Drowns out and blasts the clowns next to you blaring rap crap music when you take off.  LOL

i pu 4in exhaust,kand n air filter,have run those filters on many of my trucks and no problems they will do just fine,and got an edge ez in it,plenty of power now.

Hey, Im guessing you have an early 2007 w/no DPF correct? I know, the 2007.5 is the 6.7L, but some people get confused. Just making sure. In any event, the K&N is an acceptable filter choice. Some have had problems when they are over oiled and the filter media is a bit thinner on that filter as opposed to other choices. The K&N is probably the most widely used due to the availability of the brand @ most chain autoparts stores and internet companies like Summit and Jegs. Therefore, the reported defects will be greater due to the number in use.
If your question about your next upgrade is born out of a budget concern, simply do a slip on muffler or cat back and a decent programmer from TST or MADS Smarty. If your performance plans do not involve huge fueling and turbo upgrades(as most do not)this will provide an adequate mpg return. The 5in will provide more flow than ever necessary(considering your plans), but you will also experience a much louder drone from the piping. To be completely honest, I sell just as many 5in as I do 4in on the 5.9CR Cummins. They sound awesome w/just about anything besides stock! The programmer will give you the biggest return in MPG, but you should add a less restrictive exhaust to keep the higher egt's down resulting from the programmer. Hopefullly, this info allows you to make a more educated choice  Smile

You'll need gauges too, or melting pistons can be an all to common thing. My advice on the K&N is not on the good side, same goes to Fram too. I am more happy with the 6637 duralite just my experience. 3 K&Ns that dusted 1 fram that the turbo almost ate. Good luck

I just had a cheep ($65 installed price) Glass pack put on my truck and i love it i picked up power, fuel economy, and even get complements on how my truck sounds goo but is not horribly loud like most diesels. Also you my want to look into edge juice W/ attitude for a box. Because it comes with built in gauges and is adjustable on the fly to better serve your immediate needs.

I have a 2007 Dodge Ram 2500 Heavy Duty 5.9. I've got an Edge juice with attidue,MBRP 4" turbo back straight exhaust, AFE Cold air Intake Pro Dry,and AFE Bladerunner. Stock Turbo and Stock Clutch still. I was towing a Tractor the other day that weighed 10,650# on a 30Ft Gooseneck. My exhaust temps were reaching 1,480. and kept over 1,350. I tried down shifting and letting off the gas and it didn't make a differance for long. Also My Engine Temp was getting up around 220 Not anything to worry about I know but when it has never gotten that high before towing heavier loads than this..... Whats going on? and What do I need to do to keep The temps down so I don't cook the turbo. Keep In Mind this truck still Has WARRANTY! So I have to watch what i do so the dealer won't void. The truck was dyno'd at 408RWHP before new exhaust and Hot code unlocked.

Programmers put more fuel into your engine when set higher than stock. Black smoke indicates excess unburned fuel.
More fuel = higher temps. Alot of programmers recomend not towing while programmer is set on the upper settings.

What are your air intake temps? Maybe a better intercooler is next on the list. Water methenol would help. Also check your exhaust manifold for leaks and or cracks as a preturbo exhaust leak would cause a over fueling condition that causes smoke and high EGT's.

So basically a free flowing muffler on the already existing 4" exhaust, and possibly a programmer is what you all are saying?  So now what kind of programmer would be the best for towing and fuel efficiency?  I don't need the one that will melt the tires. lol
