i just recently bought a 1997 dodge 2500 3/4 ton automatic tranny 147000km on it and i was looking to get around a 75hp to 100hp out of it i was wondering on a fairly cheap budget what upgrades would do me good i was thinking of going with a hx35 turbo with waste gate and a afe intake what else would do the trick keep in mind i wanna keep my good mileage up

Gauges should definately first, then the lift pump with additional filtering, fuel plate upgrade, and then the turbo and stuff you mentioned.

You won't get 75 to 100hp without additional fuel and adding that much power, which is roughly a third more, to that engine you should be looking at a bare minimum some ARP head studs and possibly fire rings, too.

If youre wanting only 75-100 horse more then youre looking at 280hp max. So youll want to get guages and intake exhaust etc. Then get a different fuel plate to up the power you shouldnt need head studs for that unless your going really big say 400hp. But your tranny isnt going to be able to make use of that power so youll have to look into a tourque convertor upgrade and maybe a valve body as well.

We just picked up 96hp on my '95 Dodge for free.  No fuel plate, wastegate clamped, and AFC turned all the way towards the firewall.  Truck still doesn't feel fast until it locks up in overdrive.

start with the trans then more power i did some power first and broke input shafts twice ouch and overdrive unit one converter or go to the afc slide plate forward or grind the stock one or buy one there are some good threads on here with great advice check out WHITE LIGHTINGS post its got alot of good info there hope this helps just don't want to see anyone make the mistakes i did but a 4' exhaust and a big air filter couldn't hurt for now and sliding your fuel plate there are alot of guys on here that will help you threw your build trust me its never enoff lol

Boost gauge, trans temp gauge, pyrometer, BHAF air filter (NAPA #2790), 4" free flowing exhaust, Upgraged torque converter, upgraded valve body, remove fuel plate, leave AFC stock maybe with the housing slid forward, get a boost elbow or build your own boost controller and set it up around 30-35psi, shim the governor springs so you can turn 3K RPM, and get the timing set up towards 15.5-16 degrees. This is a good setup for towing, mileage, and reliability, its cheap, and you have a little room to grow into say a set of injectors if you decide to add them later.

thanks for all the input guys so how much will this all cost ? roughly and what could i do by myself ? i was gona go with a big AFE air filter then the fuel plate sounds like it will give some more power is that cheap ? how much would a valve body be and would that save my tranny then from getting wrecked ? so i will have round $1000 to spend wat will give me the most bang for my buck ?????

If you're fairly mechanically inclined, you can do all but the timing and transmission work yourself. Talk to Goerend or Suncoast about the valve body, what it does is increases your line pressure so your clutches in the transmission lock up harder and don't slip. If anything, do the exhaust then the fuel plate so your EGT's stay down. For how much it'll cost, you'll have to shop around it all depends on where you spend your money. You can save a little by straight piping your stock 3" pipe if you want to.

what would be cheaper a torque converter or a valve body ? the truck already has a 4 inch exhaust i just gotta rip the muffler out and the truck already has a hole in the box cuz it used to have a stack so im gona put a 5 inch stack on it i have a fair amount of mechanical experience how hard is the fuel plate to do and what do people say when they mean the grinded it down ?

The valve body, since all you need to do it remove the pan, replace the valve, install a new gasket, and refill the fluid.

There was an article on this in a past issue, took them 30 to 40 minutes to do it.

You should do both a torque converter and valve body. If it has a 4" exhaust, it already has a flow-through muffler and you won't gain anything by removing it other than sound. Here's how to do the fuel plate:

Use the 11 mm deep well socket to loosen the lower clamp on the upper intake connection hose and slide the lower clamp off of the hose. Remove the six bolts holdinng the air intake connection and dipstick tube in place using the 10 mm six point socket...NOTE: observe that these bolts are different lengths. Remove the intake manifold connection and hose as a unit, taking care NOT to damage the gasket. This gasket can normally be reused, however, if torn, replace the gasket with a new one. Remove the AFC housing assembly by removing the 4 screws (2 are 8 mm and 1 is standard flat head) including the factory break off screw with a rounded head and no screwdriver, Allan head or TORX slot. The hammer and sharp chisel can be used to remove the break of screw by making a notch in the outside diameter of the head, then tap the screw with light blows counter clockwise to remove. Pull the fuel shutdown solenoid bracket away from the AFC housing. Lift the AFC housing, moving it out of the way toward the rear of the engine. Remove the two flat head screws holding the fuel plate in, make sure not to drop them down into the pump. Remove the stock fuel plate. Now you can grind the fuel plate to whatever profile you desire. The part you will be grinding is the part that "hangs down" in the pump on the side that's towards the rear of the vehicle. Be careful not to get it too hot, keep a cup handy with some water and keep cooling it every few seconds. Now put it back in, and you can either leave it in stock location or slide it forward for more fuel, back if you have too much power and are slipping the tranny. Reinstall the AFC housing, using a new flat head screw to replace the break off screw, making sure the fuel shutdown solenoid is in place. Tighten down all four corners. Then reinstall air intake, and you're set.
