Need the right Diesel Truck for hauling 15,000 lbs

Had a 1997 7.3L Ford - should have kept it!
Have a 2005 6.0L Ford - should have never bought it! (3 blown head gaskets, one set of heads, and now there's fuel in the cooling system due to the bonehead mechanic at the shop I took it to for the head replacement.  Needless to say, the truck is 'Done' as the entire cooling system has been a 50/50 mix of coolant and raw diesel fuel!)

I love the Ford looks, interior, and chassis, but the friggin motors suck!  Too bad there isn't a Ford Chassis with a Cummins motor, and in front of an Allison 6 speed trans!  That would probably do it for me! Since this is not something easily created and easily 'smogged' in California, I'll have to buy the next best combo, which is what I need your inputs on.

Setting aside all the personal preferences of one brand or another, what is the most reliable platform with the best torque for pulling 15,000 lbs on flats and up grades?  My budget is about $30K ~ $35K, so it'll have to be used.  I'm not familiar with the Cummins motors, and I'm only familiar with the Duramax because a few friends have them.

Again, drop the brand flags and try to give me the best advise here.  I've been through hell and back with the Ford 6.0L and I've had 5 other Ford trucks over the years.  However, I'm ready to jump brands if it makes sense.  I use the truck for business and right now I'm out of business because of the Ford!

Thanks

Doug

Pulling 15k on grades?  That's easy .... a one ton diesel with a manual.

That rules out Chevy and Ford.

Kris,

That's a funny and straight forward answer!  It's also what I'm thinking... a Cummins with a manual trans.  What I now need to do is educate myself on the variations of the motors by year model, which one's to stay away from, etc. I also have a budget of $25K to $35K.  What do you recommend?

Well your budget puts you in both the late model CR engines (5.9L and 6.7L) so it really depends on other factors:

Do you want to get a decent 6.7L and keep it stock or delete it?

Do you want to get a decent 5.9L and mod it a bit for pulling?

What options are you looking for (SLT, Laramie, etc.)?

Are you going to need a dually, or will a SRW work for you?

I would recommend something with lower miles just so you know it hasn't been "rode hard and put away wet", because there are folks out there that really don't know how to pull/tow with a good truck, whether its a Dodge, Chevy, or Ford.

On the 5.9L side of the house, I would get an '04.5 (electronically controlled wastegate, 325HP rating) or newer.  The early '05 trucks had plastic caps on the intercooler and there should be a TSB for it.  The '06 and early '07 trucks are fine as well.

The late year '07.5 trucks with the 6.7L have some issues.  I have an '08 and haven't had any (YET!) but your best insurance for the 6.7L trucks would be to get the delete kit for it and shelf it.  If the emissions garbage fails, have the dealer fix it then bring it home and delete it.  That's what my plans are for my '08.

Get a 2006 or 2007 5.9, they don't have the DPF bull-sh**

it only rules out Ford IF they are 11's he said that he did not have enuf money for an 11 (budget of $25K to $35K) so he could get a Ford.

So did Ford bring back their manual tranny?  Nope, Dodge is still the only full size truck marketing a full size truck with the option for a manual.

Again, 15k pounds on grades and Ford has issues with that .... which was proven on the pull test thread we have doing on.  Ford has a decent engine now, but the small single turbo won't work on grades at altitude.

I'm sure that a 2008 F-350 DUALLY 6.4 can pull 15,000 pounds without breaking a sweat Cool

Wow. 15k on grade. That's it? My early 99 f-350 with a zf6 manual would eat that up without breaking a sweat!

A 6.4l in 2010 comes with a manual trans in the 1 ton. If its not enough stock, (which I know for a fact it is plenty) then put a tuner, exhaust, and intake on it. A buddy dyno'd 502 rwhp with those mods alone. If that wont pull 15k up a hill I'll kiss your a$$!

Oh, and as for the motors sucking? The engine problems are directly related to your mechanic and your service records. Any one of the big 3's diesel engines in any year is a 500,000 mile motor. If you can't keep a motor together that's your fault for not knowing how to take care of it. I'm sick of people saying 6.0's suck. I don't own one but I have worked on a few. Studs and Egr fix will make a bullet proof motor. I would stack it against any motor on the road.
